Summary

For anyone who's ever wished to, but had trouble starting, keeping, or finishing a journal or sketchbook comes Wreck This Journal, an illustrated book that features a subversive collection of prompts, asking readers to muster up their best mistake- and mess-making abilities to fill the pages of the book (and destroy them)。 Acclaimed illustrator Keri Smith encourages journalers to engage in "destructive" acts-poking holes through pages, adding photos and defacing them, painting with coffee, and more-in order to experience the true creative process。 Readers discover a new way of art and journal making-and new ways to escape the fear of the blank page and fully engage in the creative process。

Not really。Has it improved my mental health。 Not at all。Has it made me anymore creative? No。Has it made me happy? No。Despite getting all creative freedom to do whatever the book's owner wants to do with it。。。。 I cannot。 I have a feeling that in order for me to to be happy, I'll need to do some more modifications on it and after that it's going to feel even more waste of money because I could have just picked either a book that I don't want to read or book I do not like and go from there or bind some sheets of paper together and work it from there。 At the meanwhile my sketchbooks have started to get filled with others things too than just from drawings。 One of them expanded four times it's normal thickeness and to be honest, I don't have no idea what or how did that happen。 It also has flaw that if your work with wet medious, the paper will do awful things。 Also, if I were to make my own, nobody else would find it fun or enjoyable。 They would be just as lost with it as I am at the moment with this one。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I thought this was cool enough to buy as a gift 。。。 I eventually got it delivered! This is one of the more refreshing, 'creative self discovery," books I've seen。 It's effective because it allows you to step outside yourself and have fun, get silly and laugh out loud for real, not just lol because its the appropriate response to the flow of conversation。 It helped me get back into my own stride for writing after completing a few challenges before sending it off to its intended owner。 Definitely I thought this was cool enough to buy as a gift 。。。 I eventually got it delivered! I got a copy of this book in a goodiebag once。 Otherwise, I would never have owned it, because I don't think I would ever spend money on this type of book。 I was happy when I got it, though。 Wreck This Journal basically is a book that contains a lot of different creative prompts (usually one prompt a page), and you "read" it by doing those prompts。 Most of them were fun to do, some I cheated on, and some I skipped。 I only skipped three or so, because they were too much work。 One, for instance, a I got a copy of this book in a goodiebag once。 Otherwise, I would never have owned it, because I don't think I would ever spend money on this type of book。 I was happy when I got it, though。 Wreck This Journal basically is a book that contains a lot of different creative prompts (usually one prompt a page), and you "read" it by doing those prompts。 Most of them were fun to do, some I cheated on, and some I skipped。 I only skipped three or so, because they were too much work。 One, for instance, asks you to collect post stamps。 I don't know about others people, but I rarely get physical mail that contain stamps。 In the end I just drew some stamps lol。 Another prompt asks you to mail the book to yourself。 Just。。 no。 That's a waste of money and not a very nice thing to do to postal companies, because you are basically wasting their time。 If you own this book, have fun with it。 Try to be as creative as possible, or if you don't want to do that, just do the bare minimum。 In the end, you'll get a book that contains some of your memories。 If you don't own this book and you are wondering whether you should get it: I wouldn't necessarily recommend it。 Personally, I think it's nice to get as a gift, but not really something to buy for yourself。 。。。more

I’m not usually a fan of books like this where the book itself is a gimmick, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one。 It was given to me by a colleague (shout out to Fran at Wycombe Arts Centre) as a Christmas present, and I’d already heard quite a bit about it from BookTube and so I was looking forward to getting stuck in。I ended up using it as an excuse to film a new video series for my YouTube channel, even though it’s been done before。 I was pleasantly surprised by how effective it was fo I’m not usually a fan of books like this where the book itself is a gimmick, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one。 It was given to me by a colleague (shout out to Fran at Wycombe Arts Centre) as a Christmas present, and I’d already heard quite a bit about it from BookTube and so I was looking forward to getting stuck in。I ended up using it as an excuse to film a new video series for my YouTube channel, even though it’s been done before。 I was pleasantly surprised by how effective it was for tackling my anxiety, even though I had heard that it was good for it。 I don’t know, sometimes stuff like this ends up being more stressful than relaxing, but that wasn’t the case here。Basically, it was a lot of fun to tackle all of the different challenges, and it’s definitely something that I’d recommend doing if you’ve been thinking about it。 I can also attest to the fact that it makes for an excellent gift, and indeed it’s probably one of the best presents that I got this Christmas。 That might not be saying much though, because I think there’s a load waiting at my mum’s。 。。。more

My neighbors put out a bunch of books in the spot in our building where people put stuff for other people to take if interested, so I picked this up as a friend of mine had been on about how great it is for quite some time。 I'm a collage and mixed/multimedia artist and destroy books on the regular, so a book built to be destroyed and altered is an interesting idea to me and I'm a bit of a sucker for books that help with creativity and how to change the ways you see the things around you: I'm cle My neighbors put out a bunch of books in the spot in our building where people put stuff for other people to take if interested, so I picked this up as a friend of mine had been on about how great it is for quite some time。 I'm a collage and mixed/multimedia artist and destroy books on the regular, so a book built to be destroyed and altered is an interesting idea to me and I'm a bit of a sucker for books that help with creativity and how to change the ways you see the things around you: I'm clear that anything is an art supply if you just use it properly。This book is interesting and it does what it's intended to do, but there are definitely some issues with the author's assumptions about the reader, some of which are ableist。First, there's a page where the instructions are to draw with your left hand。 Not your non-dominant hand, your left hand。 Does the author not know that many people are left-handed or ambidextrous and normally draw with their left hands? I hit this page and thought, what's special about drawing with the hand I normally draw with? No idea。Second, there are some seriously gross and unsanitary suggestions made here。 Make an ugly drawing, using ugly materials, where the author suggests poop and dead things。 I'm totally into unconventional supplies, but there's a limit and the limit is "do I want to keep this around my apartment where it may stink and attract bugs?" There are also a lot of "mark the page with food" suggestions that are definitely set up in a particular way - this includes "put coffee on this page!" like, yes, coffee can be used to mark paper, but I hate coffee and don't ever have it around; and "eat a bunch of brightly-colored candy and lick this page!" which assumes people can have food coloring safely。 Finally, there are a lot of suggestions that make assumptions about the user's mobility, living space, and gender, including things like attaching string to the book and dragging it behind you on a walk, climbing something and dropping it from high up, picking up the journal without using your hands, and attaching string and swinging it around you。 I think these things are valid as ways to get people past the idea that books are inherently precious and you should be careful with them, but the author is assuming that people live somewhere that it's safe to walk around and where the weather won't actually completely destroy the book (we've got snow, slush, ice, and salt on the ground here as I write this), that people live in a space where they can swing something around on a string without breaking anything or hurting anyone, some people will pick things up without using their hands as the norm due to disability, and plenty of people can't safely climb stuff or roll the book down a hill (and retrieve it) because of disability issues。 There's also no "mark this page with your mobility device" or "roll over this page with your wheelchair" to even it out。 So this is both more ableist than necessary, and physically battering the book or taking it in the shower does nothing for me in terms of creative exercise, though it does make me wonder if the author intended people to take it into the shower before or after marking it with poop and dead stuff。 I’d also have expected makeup to be suggested as a marking tool - I’m not femme enough to wear makeup on the regular but it’s something most of us at least have access to at home or can easily get from our local pharmacy bargain bin - perhaps that was too threatening for the editors who wanted to make sure the book wasn’t full of GIRL STUFF, EW! I do think there's a lot of interesting ideas in the book, I just think it could have been done better and in a way that is more inclusive。 Like, why no suggestions for lighting pages on fire? Soaking pages in dye? Cutting out patterns with a razor or scalpel? Using it as a coaster? Folding the page into shapes while not cutting it out? In conclusion, it's a fun idea with a mediocre execution and I don't particularly recommend it。 。。。more

this counts as literature, and also as a fully realized work of art。 few texts will ever have the reader engage with it to this level。 what an absolute joy, to just not only be allowed but encouraged to completely destroy the pretty new book you bought (or, mercifully, found unharmed in a "for free" bin at the local used book store)。books are held as a particularly sacred form of media, people go red in the eyes when they see someone so much as line them up by color, let alone draw inside, play this counts as literature, and also as a fully realized work of art。 few texts will ever have the reader engage with it to this level。 what an absolute joy, to just not only be allowed but encouraged to completely destroy the pretty new book you bought (or, mercifully, found unharmed in a "for free" bin at the local used book store)。books are held as a particularly sacred form of media, people go red in the eyes when they see someone so much as line them up by color, let alone draw inside, play with the form, cut up, samurai sword in half, break the spine, etc。 its odd because of the mass-produced nature of so many books, what is destroying one copy of harry potter really going to do? but, theyre held in that higher regard。 but along comes Wreck This Journal, pleading with you to tear out pages, spit in it, rub food and dirt on it like a little pervert, pour water onto it。 isnt that just so much fun? i brought the thing home and immediately hurled it at a wall。 welcome to my humble adobe! then i followed the instructions to the best of my ability, resulting in a big mess, a completely wrecked journal, and a lot more fun than i had initially anticipated。 i graduated with an english major and my brain automatically thinks this way。 is it "postmodern" or "meta" for a book to actively encourage the reader for its own destruction? yes and yes。 the definition certainly doesnt fit but i think Wreck This Journal is deconstructionist, because you will deconstruct the everloving tar out of the freakin thing before youre through with it。 its deconstructed over here, over there, by the sink, on the floor, in your garden。 no mainstream author would EVER have the courage to directly ask the reader to destroy their creation。 "helloooo, its me, john updike in the afterwards on page 456, thank you for reading my latest book, please tear it to pieces and place it in the nearest recycling bin。" sure, this isnt fiction, but the idea is delightful and points out certain aspects of the form and function i wont bore you with too much - just ask yourself "how many copies of Wreck This Journal that have been printed still survive today, as compared to, say, The Perks of Being a Wallflower?""but random internet guy," you ask, "this is just a journal! a journal cant be literature!" but thats where youre wrong - a true journal is just blank, empty paper for you to fill。 Wreck This Journal has AUTHORIAL INTENT and DESIGN, with the specific instructions for you the reader to follow。 it says its a journal, but its not really a journal。 its closer to (and i DO NOT mean this in an insulting way) a book for younger children, where theyre encouraged to interact with it in a way thats closer to a toy or plaything rather than the more 'respectful' curl-in-front-of-the-fireplace-with-tea-and-a-blanket interaction older children and adults typically have with books。 which is very nice。 again, how often are you allowed to play with a book in this way? page 1, fill your name。 ok。 page 2, break the spine - a mortal sin to many of those who revere books as a form。(the first book i ever destroyed was a battered paperback copy of The Brothers Karamazov i never got around to starting - the spine fell apart after some mishandling and i sadly recycled the pages as they tumbled out of the binding like an avalanche。 it must have been 10 years ago but i still remember the, like, disappointment of seeing a book crumble like that。 the second book i destroyed was Wreck This Journal, and i gleefully desecrated each and every page in their own special way。)so why is this a fully realized work of art? it asks you to do some things, you will probably end up doing them。 the intention is no more than for you to do these things, have fun, mess this up。 and if you bought it, you likely ended up doing it。 even doing ONE thing "wrecks" the journal, cant return the spit and tear book, and thus, it wins。 i mean, if you just THROW THE BOOK AWAY, it wins and succeeds in its purpose。 dont you see the beautiful, twisted logic here? the worst thing you can possibly do with this book is leave it on a shelf。 and thats unlikely, because then youre missing out on the fun。enormous recommendation to anyone and everyone。 。。。more

And also, I don't think this book encourages creativity, but rather saturates boredom。 To destroy 200 pages in individually different ways, you actually need a lot of motivation and time! I don't want to destroy。 I want to destroy what tells me to destroy, like any punk would。If I'm honest, had I more time, I would have pissed on it or set it on fire before I binned it, to ironically rebel against orders to destroy。 To wreck the orders of the journal that orders to be destroyed in a certain way。 But the joke wasn't funny enough, and I don't have THAT much time, I must pack my suitcase and it'd probably mess up my apartment somehow。 Although seeing how long this review got, maybe I should have done that and been on my way。You shouldn't need to spend £10 to be told exactly how to destroy each page, to feel good about yourself。 Is it really encouraging creativity, or rather enforcing obedience to orders to destroy? I think a great scifi plot would be if something like this book was secretly totalitarian propaganda desensitizing the youth to vandalism。 But to its merit, the education system never teaches us to destroy, and that from a Hegelian viewpoint may be an error that books like this provide an outlet and learning experience for。But, I feel like if you were bored enough to thoroughly wreck the journal you should go outside and talk to people or go outside, it would be a more enriching experience。 It bothers me that Penguin would endorse making and selling this over other aspiring storytellers, or printing absolutely any of their existing range of novels — which will be read or sold over and over again。 This book will be binned or ruined。 This book dies, it is never reread or passed down。 Almost 15,000 GoodReads users have contributed to what seems to be a very singular, destructive and meaningless experience to kill time and paper。 I understand making novelty gifts and catering to all, but does this book in any way encourage a respect or interest in reading? Does destroying a book by this author make me think this author can write and encourage me to purchase more? But hey, if anyone enjoys this or gets something out of this who am I to judge? It's definitely thinking outside of the box。 I can see the quirky appeal of it and I can see why it would sell well in a gift shop。。。 whether or not it would be read。 I can see why it would be fun to someone completely bored and young and free。 Like when I was much younger and had to sit at a parent's friend's house, the boredom of being trapped in one space。。。 I can see then how this book could be a day of activities that might help me forget I was trapped。 But even still, does it lead anywhere in improving 'creativity'? Doesn't it fail in being unable like any other book might, in leaving some lasting reflection and change us as individuals? My concern is that we live in a world where this book could not only sell, but sell well。I'm probably being too serious, and trying to give this 'novelty book' more thought than it deserves or requests, but consider my position。 It's just sad that in receiving this as a gift, I have been put in a position where I either directly recycle it without using it, or trash it in a time-consuming and repetitive way that vies against my ecological views and personality。 This book should only be those who buy it for themselves。 And should those people, not instead, turn their £10 tender into pennies, and find fun things to do with pennies instead? Ideologically, this book bothers me not because of what it is, but what it represents。 But if only I was given this when I was preconscious, seven years old again, this would've been on my read shelf, and might've made a weekend afternoon more memorable。 Though in honesty, given the choice, I probably would've played video games instead。 。。。more
